MIDEM Cannes 1999

Photographs filed daily from the international music market in Cannes for LaMusica.com, January 23–28, 1999 — three months before the sale of the controlling interest to Spanish Broadcasting System. Shot, captioned and published from the French Riviera the same day, at a time when almost nobody was doing either.

Shot on a Sony Mavica. It wrote JPEGs straight to a 3.5-inch floppy disk — no card reader, no cable, no lab. It also shot short bursts of video, and its long digital zoom meant a usable frame from well across a room. That was the working kit of 1999, and it was enough to publish worldwide within hours.

These frames have been restored. The originals are 644 × 484 — the resolution of the day. Each has been run through a neural super-resolution model that reconstructs edge detail, then resized for the web. The unmodified originals are kept alongside and are the ones to use if a frame is ever needed as a record rather than as a picture.

48 photographs · source: the LaMusica.com MIDEM 1999 archive, recovered from the Internet Archive and rehosted here. Restored with Real-ESRGAN; unmodified originals retained.
Where two copies of a frame survived, the full-resolution one was kept and the thumbnail discarded. Dates come from the report page each photograph was published on.
